Business Insurance for Labor is All We Do

Having properly structured, tailored policies can help to avoid claim declinations due to missing endorsements or incorrect classification technicalities.

Some of Union Insurance Group’s Products Include:

Hire Union contractors for property repair and reconstruction work should you have a claim, even if it costs more. That is our capital stewardship guarantee to our customers. Property is insured with replacement cost values according to current construction cost estimates. Expenses for a temporary relocation due to severe property damage are also fully covered.

Protects your organization from lawsuits arising from accidents on your premises or those occurring at your hosted events at outside venues. Includes host liquor liability to cover special events like golf outings and holiday parties where alcohol is served.

Our customers can choose a Union repair shop and OEM automotive parts should you have a claim. Personally owned vehicles are covered for liability and rental vehicle coverage includes liability and physical damage when both are used in the course of Union business. Rental reimbursement, towing, and glass coverage are also included with above average limits.

For on-the-job injuries, medical coverage and lost wages are provided for all employees, including trustees or delegates receiving stipends or lost-time pay. Just one annual payroll audit allows for administration efficiency and convenience.

This extra layer of protection goes over your General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Employers’ Liability policies in the event that any of the policy limits are exceeded. It is an inexpensive way of increasing liability limits while helping you meet your Fiduciary responsibility to put cost effective protection in place.

Protects your labor organization from the financial strain of lawsuits involving allegations such as: breach of duty of fair representation; discrimination, civil rights violations; improper handling of members grievances; denial, unfair recruitment, disciplining, expulsion of members or apprentices; sexual harassment; poor financial management of operating funds; wrongful employment practices; union election misconduct, and more. This is a custom-tailored policy for labor organizations and JATCs, not a typical Director’s and Officers (D&O) Policy. This is an important distinction because typical D&O policies contain potentially restrictive wording and exclusions.

This optional coverage is offered as an endorsement on the Union Liability policy and cannot be procured on its own. Title V of the Landrum-Griffin Act, also known as the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA), says that it is against public policy to relieve union officers of liability for intentional acts such as personal profit, fraud or conflict of interest. Thus, labor leaders can be personally responsible for all defense costs until proven innocent. The Individual Labor Leader coverage bridges this gap. This endorsement provides coverage for the cost of defense, settlement and appeals for union leaders who elect this optional coverage under the terms of the policy.

This professional liability policy covers Funds and their respective trustees personally while administering the financial management of the fund. All ERISA-regulated multi-employer plans should have this coverage in place, regardless of the professional staff or TPA managing the funds. Union Insurance Group makes concerted efforts to stay on top of the ever changing DOL regulations to ensure that our customers have the latest coverage endorsements to be adequately prepared for audits and investigations at any time.

In this age of data breaches affecting organizations of all sizes and shapes, Cyber Security coverage is vital to any risk management plan. If laptops get stolen, documents with personal information get tossed instead of shredded, or hackers break through the most sophisticated firewalls, your labor organization is held accountable. If you discover that a member or participant’s data was possibly stolen, state law mandates precise actions including notifying every potentially affected person to avoid fines up to $1,500,000. Cyber Liability coverage will help pay for costs associated with a data breach and provide a team of experts to guide you through the required steps.

Union Locals and Councils are protected by Labor Organization Bonds purchased by their International Union and multi-employer trusts are required to purchase ERISA crime bonds. Both bonds usually cover 10% of funds handled, up to $500,000. However, these policies cover only theft by employees and the limit may be insufficient for the size and scope of operations. Higher limits and broader coverage are available with a recommended supplemental Crime policy.

Even when meticulous safety precautions are taken, accidents can still happen. A Group Accidental Death and Dismemberment policy can help close the coverage gap between general liability and workers compensation by combining the following benefits into a single, cost effective participant policy to ensure timely payments at a critical time. It pays medical expenses to help cover the cost of treating an accidental injury as well as a lump sum for accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech or hearing.

Most commercial property insurance policies contain limited or no coverage for flood damage. Flood policies should be considered even if you are not located in a flood zone, there are other reasons to consider a flood policy such as: if your area experiences fast melting snow in the spring, if you are in an office complex sandwiched by other offices where leaky pipes could impact your space, or if your drains clog and cause water overflow causing flood damage.

Standard commercial property insurance policies typically exclude damages to property caused by earthquakes or earth movement. A separate policy must be in place to cover damages sustained by earthquakes.

Customized Director’s & Officer’s policy designed to protect non-profit organizations such as JATCs and LMCCs from the financial strain of lawsuits involving claims of wrongful dismissal, harassment discrimination, wage & hour, failure to educate, and personal injury.

It’s extremely wise to engage Union Insurance Group in taking a review of your policies to see where there might be deficiencies and often times it’s amazing what they find and then how much savings you can also afford.
